Rainbow History Rainbow was designed by W Starling Burgess and launched in 1934 from the Herreshoff shipyard where it was built in just 100 days to compete in the America's Cup against Endeavor. This J class incorporated a duralumin pear-shaped mast, designed to take the tension of the double jib - first used in Whirlwind - and was originally rigged with a Park Avenue spinnaker. This was later removed because it was considered too heavy.
